'96 Autumn, Opera Concert Report
After the Internationale Haydntage, there was a concert in Belgium, then the activity of Haydn Orchestra is now a short rest until the Festival l'Epau at Le Mans, France on May. During this off season, Vienna Symphony Orchestra which many members of Haydn Orchestra belongs, made a successful world tour including Washington DC and Japan. Also, Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra attended Verdi Festival in Greece with Adam Fischer. It is seldom for the symphony orchestra, they played the opera Macbeth at Athens. Adam Fischer himself was very busy for his own performances including operas in Zurich and Vienna, or the concert with English Chamber Orchestra at London.
Zurich Opera Productions
The small opera house but known as creative productions, Zurich Opera is now the center of Mr. Fischer's activity. Therefore, from September to this January, he had conducted 4 programs, 26 performances.
The first half was Donizetti's Linda di Chamounix· and Cimarosa's Il Matrimonio Segreto. Especially, November 10 was a very busy day for him since he had both operas as Matinee and night performance.
Adam had conducted many of Italian Opera, however, after December, he showed fully his own ability in German Opera with Strauss's Fledermaus· and Mozart's Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail.
Vienna State Opera Lucia di Lammermoor
Following Zurich Opera, there were three performances of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor at Vienna State Opera from October 27 to November 4. The title role Lucia was sang by the Hungarian soprano Andrea Rost, who recently played the same role at Paris Bastille Opera, and also won a lot of applause at Covent Garden with Violetta of La Traviata. While Jean-Luc Chaignaud and Giuseppe Sabbatini played supporting role.
According to the fan club member Dr. Wisgerber who saw the performance of November 4, it was much more impressive than Andrea Chénier· by Pavalotti he saw few days ago.
After this performance, soprano Andrea Rost went to USA and made a debut at Metropolitan Opera with Adina of Donizetti's L'Elisir d'·Amore.
Concert Activities
Not only opera, Adam does not neglect concert activities. On November 13, Adam Fischer conducted English Chamber Orchestra at London Barbican. It was a new orchestra for him but the soloists was his friend, Thomas Quastohoff, who appears Eisenstadt often. He played works of Mozart including Jupiter· symphony.
Also, he had a concert of Haydn Program with Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra which he works as Principle Guest Conductor.

Metropolitan Opera Aida
Adam Fischer is known as the activities in Europe, but from this February, he will appear at Metropolitan Opera in New York again. Following Othello· and Il Babire in Seviglia·, this year he will conduct 11 performances of Verdi's masterpiece Aida.
This is the tragic love story of the Ethiopian Princess Aida who is the slave of Egypt and Egyptian young commander Radames. As it is a very popular repertory of major opera companies, it is know as a spectacular production. Huge Egyptian Temple or the long queue of the triumph march, the production of Metropolitan Opera that has the reputation for the big stage set, looks as if they build Memphis, the city of Ancient Egypt at the center of New York. This popular production was taped with Conductor James Levine and Radames of Pracido Domingo, that won the Emmy award in 1989.
The title role Aida will be played by the soprano Sharon Sweet and Lisa Gasteen who will make MET debut with this performance. American Mezzo soprano Dolora Zajick , as well as Stefania Toczyska , will sing her signature role Amneris who is the princess of Egypt and Aida's rival. Tenor Michael Sylvester and Richard Margison will play Radames. The supporting actors are also very good including Sherrill Milnes (Amnasro) and Rene Pape (the king).
This performance has a lot of the problems for conductor, such as, a large stage and auditorium or big chorus and ballet. Let's watch the conducting of Adam Fischer.
Baratom will report this performance in the next issue or No. 16. Also, the performance on March 1 will be broadcasted by radio to USA, Canada and Europe including England (BBC3), the Netherlands (NOS), Germany (ARD), Austria (ORF), Hungary (MR)

Editorial Note
Internet is one of the most growing new media even in the Music Business. Many Orchestras and Opera Houses started their Home Page. It has been one year since we got the fan club home page . Fortunately, it is very successful and as of the end of ·'96, the total access count exceeded 10,000.Next issue will be the special edition of Haydn Orchestra Ten Years Anniversary. We are planning to report a lot of article, such as the history of their concert and the funny, unbelievable episode. If you have some story that can be shared, please let us know
