In addition to his current
engagement as the Music Director of the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra and as Permanent
Guest Conductor of the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra, effective from January, Adam
Fischer has accepted the position of Chief Conductor of the Danish Radio Sinfonietta.
The Danish Radio Sinfonietta is part of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, and is an active player in Danish musical life. It has been called "Denmark's best Mozart Orchestra" and Viennese Classicism is perfect for the ensemble. The orchestra also specializes in Danish music and contemporary composers, many of whom appear on their recordings. Every summer the Danish Radio Sinfonietta plays at big open-air concerts. In the past the orchestra has played with Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras in '92, and Placido Domingo in '93.
There are 54 members of the orchestra. It is a big chamber orchestra. It is in rapport with Adam who is also attached to Viennese Classics, such as Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. They had already performed some concerts and radio recordings. As Chief Conductor, Adam Fischer will plan and perform four concerts in a year and take part in the personnel decision hereafter. However, he will remain the Music Director of the Haydn Orchestra and the Internationale Haydntage as before.
This news was announced in Denmark on the day of the concert on January 10. His first task as Chief Conductor is the triumphal tour to Budapest Spring Festival in March, and then he will appear in Copenhagen in a Mozart Weekend starting on April 30.

- Congratulations on your new position as the Chief Conductor. How did the whole story happen?
Adam Fischer "I conducted the Radio Sinfonietta first time in 97/98. It was a nice concert and I liked them very much. So, I tried to invite them to the Budapest Spring Festival. When I performed with the orchestra last September after the Haydntage, they offered me the position of Chief Conductor because they wanted to develop the Viennese Classical repertoire. I had thought about the scale of the responsibility and accepted because it is not a full time job."
- After resigning from the Kassel State Theater, I have heard that several orchestras and opera houses had offered you some important positions. Why do you accept the Danish Radio Sinfonietta?
Adam Fisher "First, there is a change in my personal life. Since my two children have graduated from school, my wife Doris can travel with me. It is also possible to move from Hamburg. Second, I want to have the challenge of a permanent orchestra. Since Kassel I have worked with many orchestras as Guest Conductor. It was very good for me but there are many things can not be achieved by a Guest Conductor. In the future, I would like to have close relations with a particular orchestra and new challenges."
- What are the characteristics of the orchestra?
Adam Fischer "It is a chamber orchestra with 54 musicians. The important repertoire is 18th century music including Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven"
- What is your plan about Danish music and contemporary works that are an important part of the repertoire of the Danish Radio Sinfonietta?
Adam Fischer "There are many good Danish composers. In addition to Viennese Classics, I want to conduct Danish 18th century music too. As for contemporary music, I do not have a plan at the moment."
- What is the difference between the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra and the Danish Radio Sinfonietta?
Adam Fischer "Since the Radio Sinfonietta is a Danish Orchestra, it is completely different from the Haydn Orchestra which is native to Austro-Hungarian culture. Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven are the local dialect to the Haydn Orchestra. The Danish Radio Sinfonietta plays very good Viennese Classics but it is still in the Danish style. It is not the same. That's why the orchestra asked me as someone who is familiar with Viennese Style to be the Chief Conductor. With the Danish Radio Sinfonietta, I would like to establish the Viennese Classical style in Denmark.
- Some fans are concerned that you may not have enough time to work with the Haydn Orchestra?
Adam Fischer "That will never happen. I am the founder of Haydn Orchestra and the musicians are my friends. In order to fulfil the responsibility of the orchestra in residence, the orchestra will invite guest conductors and play more performances in future. However, I will conduct more than 90 percent of their entire performances. The relationship with the Haydn Orchestra will be the same and as important as before, or even more. Please do not worry."
- How about the guest conducting of the world famous orchestras and opera houses, such as Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra or Zurich Opera?
Adam Fischer "It may gradually decrease in the future because I want to have a stable relation with the same orchestra."
- Thank you very much for your time.
Adam Fischer was born in 1949 and next few years will be most fruitful period of his career. As you can see from the interview above, he is eager to a new challenge. 1999 will be a big turning point for Adam. We fans must watch him carefully.
