10th anniversary of Fan Club Home Page

In 1996 the Internet was not yet popular and few people knew the technology. But 10 years later, everybody has a home page and the Internet is one of important media of information. On February 1st we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our home page. At the same time, this fan club newsletter reaches its 50th edition.
When we started, there were very few internet sites and hardly any sites related to classical music. Our home page is older than most of sites of orchestras or opera companies, such as the Vienna Philharmonic or the Metropolitan Opera.

During these 10 years, more than 150,000 people have visited our site. Currently we have about 5000 hits each month, mainly from the USA and Japan, followed by European countries. Sometimes we are visited from countries like South Africa or Brazil, where Adam Fischer has never appeared.
The most frequently accessed page is “Concert Halls of the world”. We have introduced more than 30 concert halls in the USA, Europe and Japan. This information is one of the most important collections of famous concert halls on the Internet.

On the occasion of our anniversary, we have added a new photo album page of Adam Fischer and the Haydn Orchestra. There are many interesting pictures that we took over the last 10 years. Please visit our site at http://www.haydnphil.org.

Since our server is planning an upgrade in the near future, some features may be disabled temporally. But we will ensure it is fully functional as soon as possible. And of course we will regularly add interesting information.

Adam Fischer’s activities in Vienna

The Vienna Symphony’s Sylvester concert is one of the important concerts in Vienna during the holiday season. Every year the orchestra invites world famous guest performers to play Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Adam Fischer appeared the podium on New Year’s Eve 2005. Ricarda, Merbeth, Lioba Braun, Robert Dean Smith and Alfred Muff sang the solo parts.

Before New Year, Adam conducted the Symphoniker at the Musikverein. The concert started with Haydn Symphony No. 93, Honegger’s “Une Cantate de noel” with choir piled up the atmosphere of the festivity. After the intermission, the orchestra played the dramatic Brahms symphony No. 1.

After the New Year, Adam appeared at the Vienna State Opera and conducted the Ring cycle. This was the cycle of current production by Adolf Dresen. Many world class Wagner singers joined the performance, including Deborah Polaski (Brünnhilde), Christian Franz (Siegmund and Siegfried), and Alan Titus (Der Wanderer). Ildikó Raimondi made a role debut as Gutrune in “Götterdämmerung”.

Editorial Note – No. 50 of Barátom

T It was in 1993 that Adam Fischer told me the story of Deszö Ranki fan club in Japan. Nobody knows what kind of organization, but Hungarian musicians were very jealous because of its existence. So I promised to him I would set up his fan club. The first newsletter was published in December. Since then it has been 50 issues.
The website started in 1996. Those days the internet was called “World wide web”. It was used by only PC freaks or computer researchers. I didn’t imagine that internet becomes one of the important news media like TV or radio.

Nowadays there are several sites about Adam or the Haydn Orchestra, but our fan clubs principle remains. We want to be a bridge between fans and the artists. Today we celebrate one milestone, and start one step towards the next.

The next Barátom No. 51 is scheduled for the middle of May. In this issue, we plan to report the Mozart 250th birthday Mozart week in Salzburg, as well as Adam’s first “Der fliegende Hollander” at the Bavarian State Opera.               Sayuri Oshima (President of Adam Fischer & Haydn Orchestra Fan Club).
