Adam Fischer’s activities in Budapest

Adam Fischer was appointed General Music Director of the Hungarian State Opera last June. Since then he has already taken over the management work. He and the opera management are planning the 2008/09 season program. Although not officially announced, Adam will conduct several important productions.

The season opening and his debut performance as GMD will be in October. It will be the new production of “Fidelio” or “Der Fliegende Hollander”. Top level guest singers will sing at the opening.

Since 2009 is Handel & Haydn memorial year, another new production by Adam Fischer will be their work.   Detail schedules will be announced later.

Do not forget the Budapest Wagner Days project. Since this year’s first Ring cycle is sold out far in advance, they are planning two cycles in June 2009. In addition there may be a revival of “Parsifal”. In 2010 could be Ring and the new production of “Tristan und Isolde” The Budapest Wagner Days project is now expanding and it may become “Budapest Wagner Weeks”.

There is a rumour that Cecilia Bartoli talked about her plan in Budapest.  Since she has close artistic relation with Adam Fischer, it could be a concert in Hungarian State Opera.  But we do hot have a confirmation yet.  The Hungarian State Opera will announce the next season schedule shortly.  Please wait and do not call the opera house yet.

Editorial Note

Although Adam Fischer is very famous opera conductor in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, he conducted very few opera in his home country Hungary. His sole appearance on the podium of the Hungarian State Opera was “Bluebeard’s Castle” in 1999. That was just a half of the evening’s program.
Now he has started as GMD of Hungarian State Opera, his main place of work is Budapest. Adam came back to his old apartment in front of the opera house, where he lived when he was a boy.

Not only citizens of Budapest, the German and Austria journalists are also excited about Adam Fischer becoming GMD of the State Opera. With a beautiful venue and long history, the Hungarian State Opera could become a strong rival of the Vienna State Opera. When Adam was GMD at Mannheim, he made the ensemble famous for unique Mozart productions. There are several star conductors who can conduct a good performance. But there are very few good GMDs, who can build an extraordinary opera company. Adam Fischer proved at Mannheim, that he is one such GMD. That’s why German and Austrian media expect a lot. We in the fan club of course support his new challenge.

Next issue, we will report on the Haydn Orchestra Spanish Tour and the Budapest Spring Festival.
